Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin E, particularly in the forms of mixed tocopherols and tocotrienols, is a well-known antioxidant that has been widely used topically for skin health, including the treatment and support of dry and/or flaky skin. The justification for its use is grounded in both its biological mechanism and some clinical studies. Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage and may play a role in maintaining skin barrier function. Topical application of Vitamin E (most commonly alpha-tocopherol) has been shown in some studies to reduce transepidermal water loss, which can help maintain skin hydration and decrease dryness.

However, the overall scientific evidence supporting Vitamin E’s effectiveness in treating or significantly improving dry or flaky skin is limited and somewhat inconsistent. Some small clinical trials and observational studies have reported modest benefits, especially in the context of conditions like atopic dermatitis or as an adjunct in moisturizers. Nevertheless, larger, well-controlled studies are lacking, and not all research has demonstrated clear improvements. Oral supplementation’s impact on skin dryness is even less well substantiated, with most benefits associated with topical (not oral) use.

In summary, while there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence supporting the topical use of Vitamin E for skin dryness, the strength of the evidence is modest. Its widespread use in skin-care products is supported more by its antioxidant properties and theoretical benefits than by robust clinical data.
