Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pine, specifically pine oil and pine bark extract, has a history of traditional use in treating various skin conditions, including dry or flaky skin. Pine oil has been used in folk remedies as a topical agent thought to soothe skin irritation and dryness. In some traditional European and Native American practices, pine resins and extracts were applied to the skin for their purported emollient and healing properties. The rationale behind its use often centers on its natural content of volatile oils, antioxidants, and mild antimicrobial compounds, which were believed to help maintain skin health and barrier function.

While there is a wealth of anecdotal and historical evidence supporting its use for dry and flaky skin, robust scientific validation is limited. Some contemporary cosmetic products include pine bark extract (notably Pycnogenol®) for its antioxidant properties, which may support overall skin health and hydration. However, direct clinical trials specifically evaluating pine oil or pine bark extract for treating dry or flaky skin are scarce. Most available evidence remains rooted in tradition and historical use, rather than in modern, high-quality scientific studies. As such, its use for these skin conditions is best characterized as traditional with low-to-moderate supporting evidence.
