Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Panthenol, also known as provitamin B5, is widely used in skincare products for its moisturizing and skin barrier-supporting properties. The scientific basis for its use in treating dry and/or flaky skin is well established. Panthenol is a humectant, meaning it attracts and retains moisture, which helps hydrate the skin and prevent transepidermal water loss. Multiple in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that topical application of panthenol improves skin hydration, enhances skin softness, and accelerates barrier repair. For example, a 2011 review in the journal Journal of Cosmetic Science summarizes evidence showing that panthenol increases stratum corneum hydration and reduces inflammation, making it beneficial for dry and irritated skin. Clinical trials have shown that creams containing panthenol can reduce symptoms of dryness, roughness, and scaling in both healthy and compromised skin (such as in patients with atopic dermatitis or after irritant exposure). The ingredient is also well-tolerated and has a low risk of adverse reactions. Overall, the use of panthenol for dry and flaky skin is supported by a robust body of scientific evidence, although most studies are small and often use panthenol in combination with other ingredients, which is why the evidence rating is not a full 5.
