Fruit acids, commonly referred to as alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), include compounds such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, citric acid, and malic acid, which are naturally found in fruits. These acids are widely used in dermatology and cosmetic formulations for their exfoliating properties. Scientific studies have demonstrated that AHAs can effectively remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells from the epidermis through gentle chemical exfoliation. This process helps to improve skin texture, reduce flakiness, and enhance moisture retention by promoting the turnover of new skin cells and increasing the skin's ability to bind water.

For individuals with dry and/or flaky skin, controlled use of fruit acids in low concentrations (typically 5-10%) can smooth rough patches and improve overall hydration. Clinical trials and in vitro studies have shown that AHAs can increase skin hydration and normalize desquamation (the shedding of the outermost skin layer). However, overuse or high concentrations may cause irritation or worsen dryness, so products are formulated carefully for this skin type. The use of fruit acids for these conditions is well-established in modern dermatology, supported by peer-reviewed studies and clinical experience, making their use for dry or flaky skin scientifically validated.
