Evidence supporting the use of: Fat liver oil
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Certain types of "fat liver oil," most commonly cod liver oil, have been used both traditionally and in more recent times to support skin health, particularly for dry or flaky skin. Cod liver oil is rich in omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA), as well as vitamin A and vitamin D. There is moderate scientific evidence to suggest that omega-3 fatty acids can support skin barrier function, hydration, and reduce inflammation, which may benefit individuals with dry or flaky skin. Several small clinical studies and reviews have shown improvements in skin hydration and the management of conditions like eczema with omega-3 supplementation, though these are often not specific to cod liver oil itself but to omega-3s in general. Vitamin A is also essential for normal skin cell turnover, and deficiency can lead to dryness and scaling. However, high doses of vitamin A can be toxic, and supplementation should be approached with caution. Although there is scientific plausibility and some supportive evidence, the overall quality and amount of direct clinical research specifically linking cod liver oil to improvements in dry or flaky skin is limited. Thus, the evidence is rated as modest (2/5).
