Evidence supporting the use of: Echium Oil
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Echium oil, derived from the seeds of Echium plantagineum, is rich in omega-3 (stearidonic acid), omega-6 (gamma-linolenic acid), and omega-9 fatty acids. Several studies have explored its effects on skin health, particularly its role in improving skin hydration and barrier function. Research indicates that the oil’s unique fatty acid profile helps support the skin’s natural barrier, reducing transepidermal water loss and improving moisture retention. A randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Dermatological Science (2011) found that topical application of echium oil significantly improved skin dryness and reduced scaling in subjects with dry skin conditions. Another study in Experimental Dermatology (2014) reported that echium oil, when included in moisturizers, enhanced skin smoothness and reduced the appearance of flakiness compared to a placebo. The presence of gamma-linolenic acid is notable, as this fatty acid is known for its anti-inflammatory and barrier-supporting properties, similar to other oils like evening primrose and borage oil, which are established treatments for dry skin. While the clinical evidence is not as extensive as for some other oils, the available studies and the biochemical rationale provide moderate scientific support for the use of echium oil in treating or supporting dry and/or flaky skin.
