Evidence supporting the use of: Black Currant Seed Oil
For the health condition: Skin (dry and/or flaky)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Black Currant Seed Oil is used to support dry and/or flaky skin due to its rich content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an omega-6 fatty acid, as well as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid. These essential fatty acids are important for maintaining skin barrier function and hydration. Several small-scale human studies and animal models have indicated that supplementation with GLA-rich oils, including black currant seed oil, may improve skin moisture, reduce transepidermal water loss, and alleviate symptoms of atopic dermatitis or dry, flaky skin. However, the evidence is not robust, with most studies being small, of short duration, or of varying methodological quality. A 2012 review in the journal Advances in Therapy highlighted modest improvements in skin dryness and elasticity with black currant seed oil supplementation, but the review emphasized the need for larger, high-quality clinical trials. Overall, while there is some scientific basis for its use, the strength of evidence is moderate at best, and black currant seed oil should not replace established medical treatments for chronic skin conditions.
