Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Almond oil has a long history of use in traditional medicine for treating dry and flaky skin, but there is also scientific evidence supporting its benefits for this purpose. Almond oil is rich in fatty acids, particularly oleic and linoleic acids, which are known to help restore the skin barrier and reduce transepidermal water loss. Several small clinical studies and laboratory investigations have demonstrated that topical application of almond oil can improve skin hydration and reduce symptoms of dryness and irritation. For example, a study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2010) found that almond oil improved skin barrier function and hydration in a group of healthy volunteers. Additionally, almond oil contains vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant and may help protect the skin from oxidative stress, further supporting its role in skin health. While more robust clinical trials are needed to fully establish its efficacy, the current evidence, combined with widespread traditional use, supports the topical use of almond oil as a moisturizer for dry and flaky skin. It is generally well-tolerated but should be avoided by individuals with nut allergies.
