Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Water chestnut (Eleocharis dulcis or Trapa natans) has been used in traditional medicine systems, particularly in parts of Asia, for general health and as a food ingredient, but its use specifically for skin care is based more on traditional practices than on robust scientific validation. In some traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic remedies, water chestnut is thought to have cooling, anti-inflammatory, and detoxifying properties, which are believed to be beneficial for skin health. These traditional uses include treating rashes, boils, or skin irritations, often by consuming the plant or applying preparations made from it.

However, scientific studies directly investigating the effects of water chestnut on skin health are very limited. Some laboratory research on water chestnut extracts has identified antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds, such as polyphenols and flavonoids, which could theoretically benefit skin by reducing oxidative stress or inflammation. Despite these findings, there is insufficient clinical evidence to confirm its efficacy for skin care in humans. Therefore, while water chestnut’s use in skin care is rooted in traditional practices, the scientific support for these uses remains weak and primarily theoretical.
