Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Tofu, made from soybeans, is a rich source of isoflavones, plant-based compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Scientific studies have investigated the effects of soy isoflavones on skin health, particularly in the context of aging and moisture retention. Some research shows that regular dietary intake of soy isoflavones can improve skin elasticity, reduce fine wrinkles, and enhance skin hydration by promoting collagen synthesis and reducing oxidative stress. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in Journal of the American College of Nutrition (2007) found that postmenopausal women consuming soy isoflavones experienced significant improvements in skin elasticity and decreased wrinkles compared to a placebo group.

However, these benefits are mostly associated with oral consumption of soy products, such as tofu, rather than topical application. While the evidence is promising, it is still limited, and the studies are often small-scale or focused on specific populations (e.g., postmenopausal women). There is a lack of large-scale, long-term clinical trials directly linking tofu consumption to general skin health in the broader population. Therefore, while scientific evidence exists to suggest tofu may support skin health, the overall strength of evidence is moderate and further research is warranted.
