Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phytoene is a colorless carotenoid found naturally in various fruits and vegetables and is a precursor in the biosynthetic pathway of other carotenoids. Its use in skin care has emerged primarily due to its antioxidant properties. Several laboratory and preclinical studies suggest that phytoene, along with its derivative phytofluene, can help protect skin cells from oxidative stress induced by ultraviolet (UV) light and environmental pollutants. These antioxidative effects may contribute to the prevention of photoaging and the maintenance of skin health. Additionally, some small clinical studies and in vitro experiments have indicated that phytoene can reduce UV-induced erythema (skin redness) and may support an even skin tone by modulating melanin production and inflammatory responses in skin cells.

However, while the experimental and mechanistic evidence is promising, robust clinical trials in humans are currently limited. Most available data come from studies on carotenoid-rich extracts, rather than isolated phytoene, making it difficult to attribute observed effects solely to this compound. As such, the evidence supporting phytoene’s specific benefits in general skin care is moderate and mostly based on its antioxidant potential rather than direct clinical outcomes. Further research is needed to confirm its efficacy and optimal usage in dermatological applications.
