Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Omega-3 fatty acids, primarily found in fish oil and certain plant oils, have gained scientific attention for their potential benefits in skin care. Research suggests that omega-3s, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), can help maintain skin health by modulating inflammation, supporting the skin barrier, and improving hydration. Clinical studies have demonstrated that omega-3 supplementation may reduce symptoms associated with inflammatory skin conditions such as psoriasis and atopic dermatitis, largely due to their anti-inflammatory properties. Additionally, omega-3s may help protect the skin from photodamage caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation, potentially reducing the risk of sunburn and premature skin aging.

However, while the biological rationale and some clinical data support the use of omega-3s for general skin health, large-scale, well-controlled trials are still limited. Most of the evidence comes from small studies, observational data, or trials targeting specific skin disorders rather than general skin care. As a result, the evidence is rated as moderate (3/5). Omega-3 supplementation is generally considered safe for most people, but it should be used as an adjunct to, not a replacement for, established skin care practices such as sun protection and moisturization. Overall, omega-3 fatty acids represent a promising, evidence-supported adjunct for supporting skin health, particularly in the context of inflammatory or dry skin conditions.
