Nettle (Urtica dioica) has a long history of traditional use for supporting general skin health. In European folk medicine, nettle preparations—ranging from teas and tinctures to topical applications—have been used to soothe skin irritations, treat eczema, and manage other dermatological concerns. The plant is rich in bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, vitamins (especially vitamin C), minerals, and polyphenols, which are believed to contribute to its effects on the skin.

While there is some preliminary scientific evidence suggesting anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of nettle, robust clinical evidence specifically supporting nettle's role in general skin care is limited. A few small-scale studies and in vitro experiments have shown that nettle extracts may inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines and protect against oxidative stress, mechanisms that could theoretically benefit skin health. However, these findings have not yet translated into large, high-quality clinical trials specifically for general skin care outcomes.

Overall, nettle’s use for skin care is primarily rooted in traditional herbal practice, with some modest scientific rationale based on its phytochemical content and biological activities. More rigorous research is needed to clearly establish its efficacy for general skin care.
