Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lotus, specifically the flowers, seeds, and extracts from species such as Nelumbo nucifera (Sacred Lotus), have been used in traditional medicine systems, including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for a variety of skin-related purposes. Historically, lotus extracts have been applied to soothe irritated skin, treat rashes, and promote a clear complexion, attributed in part to their purported cooling, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. In these traditions, lotus preparations are often incorporated into topical pastes, oils, or washes.

From a scientific perspective, there is limited but emerging research suggesting that lotus extracts possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing effects, which could theoretically benefit skin health. Some in vitro and animal studies have identified phenolic compounds, flavonoids, and alkaloids in lotus with potential protective effects against oxidative stress and inflammation. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and most evidence remains preclinical or anecdotal. Thus, while there is a strong traditional basis for lotus in general skin care, scientific validation is currently modest.
