Evidence supporting the use of: Fish roe
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Fish roe, which refers to the eggs of fish such as salmon or sturgeon, has become a notable ingredient in some high-end skincare products. Its use is primarily justified by emerging scientific evidence, though the overall quality and quantity of research are still limited. Fish roe is rich in nutrients such as omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids, vitamins (especially vitamin A and E), and antioxidants, all of which are believed to support skin health. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that extracts from fish roe can improve skin hydration and barrier function, as well as reduce the appearance of wrinkles, likely due to their bioactive lipid and protein content. Some small-scale clinical studies and in vitro research have shown promising results regarding anti-aging and moisturizing effects of fish roe extracts when applied topically. However, large-scale, independent, peer-reviewed clinical trials are largely lacking, and much of the data comes from studies sponsored by cosmetics companies.
There is little evidence of traditional use of fish roe specifically for skin care, as its historical use has mainly been dietary. Current evidence suggests that while fish roe contains beneficial nutrients for the skin, more research is required to confirm its efficacy and safety in topical formulations. Thus, the scientific support exists but remains modest at this stage.
