Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cereal grass, such as wheatgrass and barley grass, has been traditionally used in various cultures as a general tonic, believed to promote overall health, including skin health. The rationale behind its traditional use for skin care is largely attributed to its content of vitamins (like A, C, and E), minerals, chlorophyll, and antioxidants, all of which have theoretical benefits for skin health and repair. However, while these nutrients are known to be important for skin function, direct evidence linking the topical or oral consumption of cereal grass specifically to improvements in skin conditions is limited. Most of the available information comes from anecdotal reports and traditional health systems rather than from rigorous scientific studies. Scientific research on cereal grass for general skin care is sparse, and the few existing studies tend to be small, preliminary, or focused on animal models. Therefore, while cereal grass is popularly recommended in traditional and alternative health circles for supporting skin care, robust clinical evidence to support its efficacy is lacking at this time.
