Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Black Currant Seed Oil (BCSO) is used in skin care primarily due to its rich content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), which are omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, respectively. Some scientific research indicates that these fatty acids may help maintain skin barrier integrity and reduce inflammation. A few small clinical studies and animal models suggest potential benefits for conditions like atopic dermatitis, including improvements in skin dryness, scaling, and itching. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study published in the Journal of Dermatological Science (2002) found that BCSO supplementation improved some symptoms in patients with atopic dermatitis.

However, the number of high-quality, large-scale human trials is limited, and evidence is mixed. Some systematic reviews and meta-analyses have concluded that while BCSO may offer mild benefits for skin hydration and barrier function, results are not consistently significant compared to placebo. There is insufficient evidence to support its widespread use for general skin care or for conditions such as acne or aging. As such, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence supporting its use for certain skin issues, the overall strength of the evidence remains modest.
