Evidence supporting the use of: Beta-zeacarotene
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Beta-zeacarotene, a type of carotenoid closely related to beta-carotene, is present in certain fruits and vegetables. Carotenoids in general are known for their antioxidant properties and contribution to skin health, primarily through their ability to scavenge free radicals and protect skin cells from oxidative stress induced by UV exposure. Scientific studies on beta-carotene (the more common isomer) have shown some benefit in skin photoprotection and improvement in skin appearance when taken as a dietary supplement. However, there is very limited direct research specifically on beta-zeacarotene itself for skin care. Most evidence for its use in skin health is extrapolated from the broader carotenoid and beta-carotene literature, which suggests potential for supporting skin health by reducing oxidative damage and possibly improving skin texture and moisture. Clinical studies directly evaluating beta-zeacarotene's unique effects are sparse, and most skin care products or supplements do not highlight it as a primary ingredient. In summary, while there is a plausible scientific basis based on its antioxidant activity and its structural similarity to other carotenoids, the level of direct evidence is low, and more research specific to beta-zeacarotene is needed to draw strong conclusions about its efficacy for general skin care.
