Evidence supporting the use of: Almond fruit
For the health condition: Skin Care (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Almond fruit, particularly in the form of almond oil (extracted from the seeds), has a long history of use in traditional medicine for skin care, and its benefits are increasingly supported by scientific research. Almond oil is rich in vitamin E, fatty acids (such as oleic and linoleic acids), and antioxidants, all of which are known to support skin health. Scientific studies have demonstrated that almond oil can improve skin barrier function, increase moisture retention, and reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks. For example, a 2010 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology found that topical application of almond oil helped prevent structural damage caused by UV irradiation and slowed the aging process in skin cells.
Additionally, almond oil has been observed to have anti-inflammatory and emollient properties, making it useful for soothing dry, irritated, or inflamed skin. In clinical and preclinical studies, almond extracts have shown potential in treating skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis due to their moisturizing and anti-inflammatory effects. While more high-quality, large-scale human trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy for various dermatological conditions, the combination of favorable traditional use and emerging scientific validation gives almond fruit (and especially almond oil) a moderate strength of evidence for supporting general skin care.
