Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) is scientifically validated as an effective means to support the skeletal system. Vitamin D, including both D2 and D3 forms, is essential for calcium and phosphate homeostasis in the body, which are critical minerals for bone formation, maintenance, and repair. Deficiency in vitamin D leads to impaired bone mineralization, resulting in rickets in children and osteomalacia or osteoporosis in adults. Numerous clinical studies and meta-analyses have shown that supplementation with vitamin D2 increases serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and can improve bone health outcomes, especially in populations at risk for deficiency (such as the elderly, those with limited sun exposure, or individuals with malabsorption).

Both vitamin D2 and D3 are used to prevent and treat hypovitaminosis D and associated bone disorders. While there is ongoing debate about whether D2 is as effective as D3 for raising and maintaining serum vitamin D levels, D2 is still recognized as a valid and approved alternative in clinical guidelines. Major health organizations, including the Institute of Medicine (now National Academy of Medicine) and the Endocrine Society, acknowledge vitamin D2’s role in bone health and its utility as a supplement to support the skeletal system.

In summary, the use of vitamin D2 to support bone health is strongly supported by robust scientific evidence and underpins its widespread clinical use for this purpose.
