Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Sesame seeds have a longstanding place in traditional medicine systems, but there is also a moderate level of scientific evidence suggesting potential benefits for bone health. Sesame seeds are rich in essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and zinc, all of which are critical for maintaining healthy bones. Several studies have highlighted that sesame seeds, especially black sesame seeds, are a good dietary source of calcium, which is necessary for bone density and structural integrity. Additionally, sesame seeds contain lignans and phytosterols, compounds that may have a role in supporting bone health by modulating bone metabolism. Animal studies have demonstrated that diets supplemented with sesame seeds or their extracts can increase bone mineral density and improve bone strength. However, direct human clinical trials examining the effects of sesame seed consumption on bone health are limited. Most of the supportive data come from nutrient analysis and animal research rather than large-scale, controlled human trials. While the mineral content certainly justifies the inclusion of sesame seeds in a bone-supportive diet, further research is needed to establish direct, causal effects in humans. Thus, the use of sesame seeds for skeletal support is backed by both their rich mineral profile and some scientific inquiry, but the evidence is not yet robust or conclusive.
