Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Polygonatum species, commonly known as Solomon's Seal, have a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other Asian medical systems. In TCM, various species such as Polygonatum sibiricum and Polygonatum multiflorum are used as "tonics" to nourish Yin, moisten dryness, and support the kidneys and bones. The connection to bone health primarily stems from the TCM concept that the kidneys "govern the bones," so herbs believed to tonify the kidneys are also thought to benefit skeletal health. Historical texts and materia medica list Polygonatum as supportive for conditions like weak bones, joint pain, or recovery after injury. However, while animal studies and limited in vitro research suggest Polygonatum extracts may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and some osteoprotective activities, rigorous clinical trials in humans are lacking. There is no robust scientific consensus or large-scale human data validating its effectiveness for bone health. Thus, its use for supporting the skeletal system is justified mainly by tradition with a moderate level of evidence derived from both historical use and some preliminary pharmacological studies, but not from high-quality clinical research.
