Evidence supporting the use of: Peptides
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Peptides, particularly collagen peptides, have been studied for their potential to support the skeletal system, primarily bone health. Collagen is a major protein in bone, making up about 90% of its organic matrix. Scientific research has shown that oral supplementation with collagen peptides may have beneficial effects on bone metabolism. Several randomized controlled trials in humans have indicated that collagen peptide supplementation can increase markers of bone formation (such as osteocalcin) and, in some cases, reduce bone degradation markers. For example, a 2018 randomized, placebo-controlled trial published in Nutrients showed that postmenopausal women who consumed collagen peptides daily had improved bone mineral density in the spine and femoral neck compared to placebo after 12 months. The proposed mechanisms include stimulation of osteoblast activity and improved extracellular matrix production, which may enhance bone strength and integrity.
However, while there is promising evidence, the overall body of research remains limited in size and duration, and collagen peptide supplementation should not be seen as a replacement for established osteoporosis treatments. Other peptides, such as parathyroid hormone analogs (teriparatide), are used clinically to stimulate bone formation, but these are prescription medications, not dietary supplements. In summary, there is moderate scientific evidence supporting the use of certain peptides, especially collagen peptides, for skeletal system support, particularly in populations at risk of osteoporosis.
