Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Pearl has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurvedic medicine for centuries, often as a remedy for bone health, promoting skeletal strength, and healing fractures. The traditional rationale is based on the high calcium content in pearl powder and the belief that it supports the body's yin and strengthens bones and teeth. While it is true that pearls contain calcium carbonate, there is only limited scientific research directly linking pearl supplementation to improved bone health or significant support of the skeletal system in humans. Most available studies are small, animal-based, or in vitro, and typically focus on bioavailability of pearl-derived calcium rather than direct clinical outcomes like increased bone mineral density or fracture healing in people. Consequently, while tradition and biochemical plausibility have driven its use, robust scientific validation is lacking. Thus, its association with skeletal system support is primarily rooted in traditional practice rather than strong clinical evidence.
