Evidence supporting the use of: Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC)
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Microcrystalline hydroxyapatite concentrate (MCHC) is a compound derived from whole bone and primarily contains calcium and phosphate in a crystalline structure similar to human bone, along with other bone matrix proteins and minerals. MCHC is used as a dietary supplement to support skeletal health, especially bone density and strength. The rationale behind its use is that its composition mimics the natural bone mineral, potentially allowing for better bioavailability and incorporation into bone tissue compared to standard calcium salts.
Some scientific studies, mainly small clinical trials, have compared MCHC to other forms of calcium (such as calcium carbonate or citrate) and found that MCHC may help slow bone loss or improve bone mineral density in postmenopausal women and individuals at risk of osteoporosis. However, the evidence is limited, with relatively few well-controlled, large-scale human trials. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) recognizes the safety of MCHC as a calcium source but does not endorse any unique benefits over other calcium sources. Reviews of the literature suggest that while MCHC is a plausible supplement, the degree to which it is superior or more effective than standard calcium supplements is not firmly established.
In summary, there is some scientific support for the use of MCHC in supporting bone health, but the overall quality and quantity of evidence are moderate at best, justifying a mid-level rating.
