Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lithothamnium is a genus of red algae (calcareous seaweed) that accumulates significant amounts of calcium, magnesium, and trace minerals in its thallus. It is used as a natural mineral supplement, especially for bone health. The rationale for its use to support the skeletal system is primarily due to its high content of bioavailable calcium and magnesium—both essential for bone mineralization and maintenance of bone density. Several laboratory and animal studies have analyzed Lithothamnium-derived calcium and found its absorption comparable to, or in some cases better than, conventional calcium carbonate supplements. A few small human studies suggest that supplementation with Lithothamnium-derived minerals can improve bone mineral density markers or slow bone turnover in postmenopausal women; however, these studies are generally limited in size and duration, and there is a lack of large, long-term randomized controlled trials to confirm efficacy in reducing fracture risk or significantly improving bone health outcomes. Overall, while there is a scientific basis for its use as a mineral source for skeletal support, the clinical evidence remains modest and does not yet reach the level of robust validation. Its safety profile is generally favorable, but as with all supplements, it should be used as part of a balanced diet and lifestyle.
