Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Lithothamnion is a genus of red algae, and its calcified remains are often used as a natural source of minerals, particularly calcium and magnesium. The primary justification for its use in supporting the skeletal system is scientific: Lithothamnion-derived supplements have been studied for their ability to provide bioavailable calcium, which is essential for bone health and maintenance. Several in vitro and animal studies, as well as some small-scale human clinical trials, suggest that the calcium in Lithothamnion is well-absorbed and may contribute to bone mineral density and strength. For example, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial published in the journal Phytotherapy Research (2012) found that postmenopausal women taking Lithothamnion-derived calcium had less bone loss over a two-year period compared to placebo.

Additionally, Lithothamnion contains other trace minerals that may have beneficial effects on bone metabolism, such as magnesium and strontium. However, the overall body of clinical evidence is moderate and not as robust as that for traditional calcium sources like dairy or calcium carbonate supplements. Most studies have relatively small sample sizes, and long-term effects are not fully established. Nonetheless, the presence of bioavailable calcium and supportive, albeit limited, clinical data justify its use for skeletal support beyond mere traditional usage.
