Evidence supporting the use of: Korean Angelica
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Korean Angelica (Angelica gigas), known as "Dang Gui" in traditional East Asian medicine, has a long history of use primarily for women's health, blood circulation, and as a general tonic. Its use in supporting the skeletal system or bone health is rooted in traditional herbal formulas rather than robust scientific validation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Korean traditional medicine, Angelica species are included in some formulas intended to “nourish the blood,” which is indirectly believed to benefit the bones, especially in the context of post-menopausal women or those with blood deficiencies. However, there is little direct evidence, either historical or scientific, specifically linking Korean Angelica to improved bone density or bone healing. Most of the available research focuses on its phytoestrogenic, anti-inflammatory, and hematopoietic properties, rather than its impact on bone metabolism. Therefore, while Korean Angelica may be included in traditional formulas targeting women's health and by extension bone health, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for skeletal system support is minimal at this time. The tradition-based rating reflects its indirect historical use rather than direct proof of benefit to bones.
