Evidence supporting the use of: Hydrolyzed beef collagen
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Hydrolyzed beef collagen is used to support the skeletal system, particularly bone health, and there is a growing body of scientific evidence supporting this application. Collagen is the main structural protein in bones, making up a considerable portion of bone mass and providing a framework for mineralization. Hydrolyzed collagen, which is collagen broken down into smaller peptides for better absorption, has been the subject of several studies investigating its effects on bone metabolism and density.
Research shows that collagen peptides can stimulate osteoblast activity (cells responsible for bone formation) and may inhibit osteoclasts (cells that break down bone). Some clinical trials have indicated that hydrolyzed collagen supplementation can increase bone mineral density and improve markers of bone formation, particularly in postmenopausal women who are at increased risk for osteoporosis. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in Nutrients (2018) found that daily supplementation with collagen peptides improved bone mineral density in postmenopausal women over 12 months. Animal studies have also demonstrated positive effects on bone strength and structure.
However, while promising, the body of evidence is still developing, and not all studies have shown positive results. The mechanisms are not yet fully understood, and more large-scale, long-term human studies are needed to confirm these effects and determine optimal dosing. Thus, the evidence is supportive but not conclusive, meriting a moderate rating.
