Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), such as chondroitin sulfate and hyaluronic acid, are naturally occurring polysaccharides that play a critical role in the structure and function of connective tissues, including cartilage and bone. The most widely studied GAG in the context of skeletal health is chondroitin sulfate, which is a major component of cartilage. Scientific studies have demonstrated that chondroitin sulfate can help maintain cartilage integrity, reduce symptoms of osteoarthritis, and may slow the progression of joint space narrowing. While most research focuses on joint and cartilage health, there is indirect support for their role in supporting bone health because healthy cartilage is essential for joint function and load transmission in the skeletal system. However, evidence that glycosaminoglycans directly improve bone mineral density or significantly alter bone metabolism is limited. Most clinical trials and systematic reviews suggest moderate benefits for joint pain and function, but effects on bone itself are less well-established. Thus, the primary scientific validation relates to GAGs' supportive role in joint and cartilage health, which are integral parts of the skeletal system, rather than direct effects on bone tissue.
