Evidence supporting the use of: Glucosamine (mixed)
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Glucosamine is an amino sugar commonly used as a dietary supplement to support joint health, particularly in the context of osteoarthritis. While it is often marketed as beneficial for the "skeletal system," most scientific research focuses on its effects on cartilage and joint tissues rather than directly on bone structure or bone density. Some clinical studies have shown modest benefits of glucosamine (often in combination with chondroitin) in reducing joint pain and improving function in patients with mild to moderate osteoarthritis, particularly in the knee. However, large-scale and high-quality studies, including systematic reviews and meta-analyses, have found the effects to be small, inconsistent, or comparable to placebo. Importantly, there is little scientific evidence that glucosamine directly supports bone health or has a significant impact on bone density or the prevention of osteoporosis. Its primary role in the body is related to the formation of glycosaminoglycans, which are important components of cartilage. Therefore, while there is some scientific basis for its use in joint health, its use for overall skeletal (bone) support is not strongly supported by current scientific evidence. Most authoritative guidelines do not recommend glucosamine for bone health, but it remains popular for joint-related indications.
