Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Ghee, or clarified butter, has been used for centuries in Ayurveda and other traditional Indian medicinal systems, where it is often recommended for general health and longevity, including support of the skeletal system. In Ayurveda, ghee is believed to nourish "ojas" (vital essence) and lubricate the joints, supporting bone health and flexibility. However, the traditional rationale is primarily based on its nourishing, unctuous quality and its role as a carrier for other medicinal herbs, rather than direct evidence of bone-strengthening properties.

From a scientific perspective, ghee is a source of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K, which are important for overall health, including bone health. Vitamin K2, present in some animal fats, has been implicated in bone metabolism, but ghee is not considered a significant source of this vitamin compared to other foods. No robust clinical trials or epidemiological data directly link ghee consumption to improved bone density or skeletal health in humans. Thus, while it is traditionally recommended for bone support, scientific validation for this specific use is limited.
