Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Eggshells are primarily composed of calcium carbonate, making them a rich, natural source of dietary calcium. Scientific studies have explored the use of eggshell powder as a calcium supplement for supporting bone health, particularly in populations at risk for osteoporosis or low bone mineral density. Research published in peer-reviewed journals has demonstrated that eggshell calcium is well absorbed and can increase bone mineral density in postmenopausal women, similarly to commercial calcium carbonate supplements. Additionally, eggshells contain small amounts of other beneficial elements for bone health, such as strontium, magnesium, and collagen, which may contribute to their positive effects. However, while studies support the use of eggshell-derived calcium for improving bone mineral density and reducing bone loss, the overall volume of high-quality clinical trials is still limited. The eggshell must be properly processed to remove contaminants and ensure safety. Thus, while scientific validation exists and suggests efficacy, more large-scale, long-term studies are needed to fully confirm its benefits and safety profile. Nonetheless, current evidence supports the use of processed eggshell as a viable, natural calcium supplement for skeletal health.
