Evidence supporting the use of: Dipsacus asperloids
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Dipsacus asperloids, a species closely related to Dipsacus asper and Dipsacus fullonum, is traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine to support bone health and the skeletal system. In the context of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), related species such as Dipsacus asper (“Xu Duan”) are commonly employed to "strengthen bones and sinews" and to aid in the healing of fractures, joint pain, and lower back pain. The use of Dipsacus species for supporting the skeletal system is well-documented in classical herbal texts, and Dipsacus asperloids is sometimes used interchangeably with these related species in folk medicine traditions. However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of Dipsacus asperloids specifically for bone health is limited. Most studies and pharmacological research focus on Dipsacus asper or Dipsacus fullonum, which have shown some osteoprotective effects in preclinical models, such as promoting osteoblast proliferation and inhibiting bone resorption. There is little direct clinical evidence for Dipsacus asperloids itself. Therefore, while the traditional use is established, scientific validation is not robust for this particular species, and its use for bone health remains primarily based on tradition and extrapolation from related species.
