Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cynanchum wilfordii is primarily used in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Korea and China, where it has a long history as a tonic herb. Its use to support the skeletal system, including bones and joints, is based on traditional herbal practices rather than robust scientific research. In traditional Korean medicine, Cynanchum wilfordii (known as "Baekbuja") is believed to nourish "kidney energy," which, according to traditional theory, is closely linked to bone health. Some herbal formulas containing Cynanchum wilfordii are prescribed for symptoms related to aging, such as joint pain or weakness, under this paradigm.

However, there is very limited modern scientific evidence directly linking Cynanchum wilfordii to improved bone health or skeletal support. A few in vitro and animal studies have investigated its possible anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically support joint health, but there are no high-quality clinical trials demonstrating benefits for human bone density, fracture healing, or osteoporosis. Thus, its use for skeletal system support is justified primarily by tradition, and the scientific evidence is weak or absent.
