Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Collagen is a primary structural protein found abundantly in the human body, particularly in connective tissues such as bone, cartilage, tendons, and skin. Its role in the skeletal system is well-established, as it provides a framework for bone mineralization and contributes to bone strength and flexibility. Scientific studies have investigated the effects of collagen supplementation—usually in the form of hydrolyzed collagen—on bone health. Clinical trials suggest that collagen supplements may help increase bone mineral density and reduce markers of bone degradation, especially in populations at risk for osteoporosis, such as postmenopausal women. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2018 (Konig et al., Nutrients) found that daily collagen peptide supplementation over 12 months led to a significant increase in bone mineral density in postmenopausal women compared to placebo. However, while these results are promising, the evidence base is not yet robust enough to rate the support as very strong; more large-scale, long-term studies are needed. Currently, collagen supplementation is considered a supportive measure for bone health, with moderate scientific validation but not a primary therapy for bone disease.
