Evidence supporting the use of: Cissus quadrangularis
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Cissus quadrangularis is a plant traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for bone health, particularly in the management of bone fractures. Modern scientific research has investigated its effects on the skeletal system, providing some evidence for its efficacy. Clinical studies, mostly from India, have shown that supplementation with Cissus quadrangularis extracts may accelerate fracture healing and improve bone strength. The proposed mechanisms include stimulation of osteoblast proliferation, enhancement of mineralization, and modulation of key hormones involved in bone metabolism. Animal studies have supported these findings, indicating increased bone tensile strength and improved healing rates. However, most clinical trials have been small, short-term, and sometimes lacking in rigorous controls. A 2017 review in the journal Phytotherapy Research concluded that while data suggest a positive impact on bone healing and osteoporosis, more robust, large-scale clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and establish safety. Thus, while traditional use is strong, and there is preliminary scientific validation, the evidence base is still developing, justifying a moderate rating.
