Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chuchuhuasi (Maytenus krukovii or Maytenus laevis) is a large canopy tree native to the Amazon rainforest, and its bark has been traditionally used by indigenous peoples, particularly in Peru, for a variety of ailments. Regarding the skeletal system, Chuchuhuasi is most commonly used in traditional medicine as a remedy for rheumatic pain, arthritis, and general joint or bone discomfort. The traditional use is based on its reputed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which may help alleviate symptoms associated with bone and joint disorders. The bark is often prepared as a tincture, decoction, or infused in aguardiente (alcohol) and consumed or applied topically.

However, scientific studies to substantiate these specific uses are limited. While some laboratory research suggests that Chuchuhuasi may have anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, direct evidence supporting its efficacy for supporting bone health or treating skeletal disorders in humans is lacking. Most of the available literature references its traditional use rather than clinical trials or robust pharmacological studies. Thus, the support for its use in the skeletal system is rated low and is primarily based on traditional medical systems rather than scientific validation.
