Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Pond Turtle
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
The use of Chinese Pond Turtle (Mauremys reevesii, known as "Guī Bǎn" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) to support the skeletal system is primarily rooted in tradition rather than supported by strong scientific evidence. In TCM, turtle plastron (the underside shell) is believed to nourish "Yin," promote bone health, and strengthen the kidneys, which are thought to "govern bones." Historical TCM texts, such as "Shennong Bencao Jing" and "Compendium of Materia Medica," describe its use for conditions like weak bones, delayed skeletal development in children, and osteoporosis-like symptoms. However, the biomedical mechanisms underlying these effects are largely unstudied in modern research. While some preclinical studies suggest that extracts from turtle shell may have effects on bone metabolism in animal models, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. As a result, its reputation as a bone-supporting agent remains largely based on traditional theory and anecdotal evidence rather than validated scientific proof. Additionally, use of wildlife-derived ingredients raises concerns about sustainability and ethics. In summary, the use of Chinese Pond Turtle for bone health is supported by a long history in TCM, but lacks substantial scientific validation.
