Evidence supporting the use of: Asshide Glue
For the body system: Skeletal System (Bones)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Asshide glue, also known as Ejiao, is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from donkey skin. Its use to support the skeletal system, particularly for strengthening bones, is primarily rooted in centuries of traditional practice rather than rigorous scientific evidence. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Ejiao is believed to nourish the blood and improve overall vitality, which is thought to indirectly benefit bone health, especially in conditions associated with blood deficiency or weakness. However, the direct evidence linking Ejiao to bone strengthening is limited. Some animal studies suggest that Ejiao may have positive effects on bone density and may influence bone metabolism, but these findings are preliminary and not well substantiated in clinical human studies. There is also a lack of high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials to confirm its efficacy for skeletal health in humans. Thus, while its use for supporting the skeletal system is traditional and has historical precedent, the scientific validation for these effects remains weak or inconclusive.
