Evidence supporting the use of: Streptococcus salivarius
For the body system: Sinuses
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Streptococcus salivarius is a commensal bacterium naturally found in the oral cavity and upper respiratory tract, including the nasopharynx and sinuses. Its use to support sinus health is primarily based on emerging scientific evidence rather than long-standing traditional use. Several clinical and experimental studies have investigated specific strains of S. salivarius, such as K12 and M18, for their ability to inhibit pathogenic bacteria implicated in upper respiratory tract infections and sinusitis, including Streptococcus pyogenes and Streptococcus pneumoniae. The proposed mechanism involves competitive colonization and the production of bacteriocins, which can suppress the growth of harmful microbes. Some randomized controlled trials and pilot studies suggest that supplementation with S. salivarius K12 may reduce the recurrence of pharyngitis and tonsillitis, and there are preliminary reports of improvements in upper respiratory tract and sinus health. However, direct evidence for the prevention or treatment of sinusitis is limited, and most studies focus on general upper respiratory support. Overall, the scientific evidence for S. salivarius in supporting sinus health is promising but not yet robust, warranting a moderate evidence rating of 3 out of 5. More large-scale, targeted studies are needed to confirm its efficacy specifically for the sinuses.
