Garlic (Allium sativum) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for supporting respiratory health, including the sinuses. Various traditional systems, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, have recommended garlic for its purported ability to clear nasal congestion and reduce symptoms associated with sinusitis. This may be attributed to garlic’s natural antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help address infections and inflammation in the upper respiratory tract.

On the scientific side, laboratory studies have demonstrated garlic’s antimicrobial activity against a range of bacteria, viruses, and fungi, some of which can contribute to sinus infections. Allicin, a major bioactive compound in garlic, has been shown to have antibacterial effects in vitro. However, clinical trials specifically testing garlic for sinus support or sinusitis relief in humans are limited and generally of low quality. There is some anecdotal and preliminary evidence suggesting garlic may help reduce the severity or duration of upper respiratory tract infections, but these findings cannot be directly extrapolated to sinus health.

In summary, while garlic’s use for sinus support is primarily rooted in tradition, there is some biological plausibility based on its antimicrobial properties. However, robust clinical evidence is lacking, so its effectiveness for sinus health remains unproven by modern scientific standards.
