Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Carvacrol is a monoterpenoid phenol found in oregano oil and other plants, known for its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Its use in supporting the sinuses, particularly via inhalation or oral consumption, is based primarily on its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria and fungi that can contribute to sinus infections. Several in vitro studies have demonstrated carvacrol’s effectiveness against common respiratory pathogens, including Streptococcus pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae. Additionally, animal studies have shown that carvacrol may reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in airway tissues. However, direct clinical trials in humans evaluating carvacrol specifically for sinus health are lacking. Most human evidence is extrapolated from broader studies on oregano oil. While these studies suggest some benefit for upper respiratory health, the evidence is not robust or specific enough to make strong claims. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary research supporting carvacrol’s use for sinus support, the evidence is limited and requires further investigation, resulting in a moderate rating.
