Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cajeput oil (Melaleuca cajuputi), a close relative of tea tree and eucalyptus oils, has been traditionally used in Southeast Asian and Ayurvedic medicine for respiratory and sinus complaints. The oil contains cineole (eucalyptol), a compound also found in eucalyptus, which is known for its expectorant and decongestant properties. Historically, cajeput has been inhaled as a vapor or applied topically (diluted) to the chest to help clear nasal passages, reduce sinus congestion, and ease symptoms of colds and bronchitis.

However, while its traditional use for sinus support is well-documented, scientific validation specific to cajeput oil is limited. Most available evidence comes from studies on similar essential oils rich in 1,8-cineole, such as eucalyptus. These studies suggest that inhalation of cineole-containing oils can help reduce inflammation and promote sinus drainage. Nonetheless, direct clinical research on cajeput oil’s efficacy for the sinuses is sparse, and most claims are extrapolated from its chemical similarity to more extensively studied oils. Safety data also recommend caution, especially regarding use in children and direct nasal application due to potential irritation.

In summary, cajeput oil’s use for sinus support is primarily traditional, supported by its content of compounds with known respiratory benefits, but direct scientific evidence is limited.
