Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Sichuan Pagoda Tree, also known as Sophora japonica or Huai Hua, is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for its purported abilities to "clear heat" and "cool the blood," and is most commonly employed to treat conditions such as bleeding disorders (e.g., hemorrhoids, hematemesis, epistaxis). While there is a long history of traditional use for various inflammatory and hemorrhagic conditions, its use for sinus infection (rhinosinusitis) is not a principal indication in either the classic TCM literature or modern TCM practice. However, some herbalists may include it in multi-herb formulas aimed at treating upper respiratory inflammation, based on its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties observed in vitro. Scientific studies exploring its effects specifically on sinus infections are lacking. The evidence supporting its use for sinus infections is therefore very limited and primarily grounded in tradition rather than robust clinical research. Most modern pharmacological research on Sophora japonica focuses on its flavonoid constituents (such as rutin and quercetin), which have shown anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects in laboratory settings, but not directly in the context of human sinus infections. Thus, the justification for using Sichuan Pagoda Tree in sinus infection is mainly traditional, and the supporting evidence is weak.
