Evidence supporting the use of: Ravinsara
For the health condition: Sinus Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ravintsara (Cinnamomum camphora ct. 1,8-cineole) essential oil has been traditionally used in aromatherapy, particularly in Madagascar and parts of Europe, to support respiratory health and relieve symptoms of sinus infections. The oil is rich in 1,8-cineole (eucalyptol), a compound known for its mucolytic (mucus-thinning), anti-inflammatory, and mild antimicrobial properties. Historically, Ravintsara has been used as an inhalant or applied topically (in diluted form) to help open nasal passages, reduce congestion, and ease breathing.
However, direct scientific studies on the use of Ravintsara specifically for sinus infections are limited. Most of the available evidence comes from studies on 1,8-cineole itself, which has shown some efficacy in reducing inflammation and improving symptoms in upper respiratory tract infections. Ravintsara's use is thus primarily supported by traditional practice and extrapolation from the properties of its main constituent. There is a lack of robust clinical trials specifically addressing its efficacy for sinus infections. Therefore, while traditional use is strong and plausible mechanisms exist, the overall scientific support remains limited.
