Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

Platycodon grandiflorus, commonly known as balloon flower or Jie Geng in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine for respiratory tract conditions, including coughs, sore throat, and sinus congestion. In TCM, Platycodon root is thought to “open up the lung qi” and facilitate the expulsion of phlegm, which conceptually overlaps with symptoms of sinus infection (sinusitis), such as congestion and mucus buildup. Classical herbal formulas for upper respiratory ailments frequently include Platycodon as a key ingredient.

While there is some experimental research investigating Platycodon’s anti-inflammatory, expectorant, and antimicrobial properties, the majority of clinical evidence supporting its use for sinus infections remains limited and largely based on traditional use rather than robust, high-quality clinical trials. Some laboratory studies suggest that compounds in Platycodon, such as saponins, may have anti-inflammatory and mucus-thinning effects, which could theoretically benefit sinus infection symptoms. However, direct clinical evidence specific to sinusitis in humans is weak or lacking.

In summary, the use of Platycodon for sinus infection is primarily justified by traditional use, with only modest supportive evidence from laboratory and animal studies, but insufficient direct clinical validation for this indication.
