Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phellodendron bark (from Phellodendron amurense), known in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) as Huang Bai, has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine. In TCM, it is used for its "heat-clearing" and "dampness-drying" properties, often in formulas for conditions interpreted as internal heat or inflammation. Sinus infections, commonly considered as "heat" or "damp-heat" in the upper respiratory tract, have sometimes been treated with multi-herb formulas containing Phellodendron bark, though it is rarely the primary or sole ingredient for this condition. The bark contains alkaloids such as berberine, which has demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects in laboratory studies. However, there is a lack of robust clinical trials or scientific studies specifically examining Phellodendron bark for sinus infections in humans. Most modern references to its use for sinusitis rely on traditional practices rather than clinical validation. Therefore, while there is a traditional precedent for its inclusion in herbal blends for upper respiratory issues, the direct scientific evidence for its efficacy in treating sinus infections is limited, accounting for a low evidence rating.
