Evidence supporting the use of: Luo Han Guo
For the health condition: Sinus Infection
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Luo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii), also known as monk fruit, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is primarily valued for its sweet taste and is often used to soothe sore throats, relieve coughs, and moisten the lungs. Within TCM, Luo Han Guo is sometimes included in herbal formulas aimed at addressing symptoms associated with upper respiratory tract infections, such as cough and phlegm, and it is believed to help clear "heat" from the body. There is, however, no substantial evidence from traditional sources specifically recommending Luo Han Guo as a primary treatment for sinus infection (sinusitis). Its use in this context is largely based on its more general benefits for the respiratory tract rather than direct effects on the sinuses.
From a scientific perspective, research on Luo Han Guo has mainly focused on its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as its use as a natural sweetener. There are limited studies investigating its efficacy for sinus infections specifically. Thus, while Luo Han Guo does have a traditional role in respiratory health, its use for sinus infections is only weakly supported by tradition and lacks robust clinical validation.
