Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Lophatherum (specifically Lophatherum gracile, known as "Dan Zhu Ye" in traditional Chinese medicine) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practices. Traditionally, it is used primarily for clearing heat, promoting urination, and resolving irritability. In classical Chinese medical texts, it is often included in formulas for treating conditions associated with "heat" in the heart and small intestine, such as mouth sores, irritability, and urinary difficulty. There is very limited traditional use for upper respiratory tract conditions, and some practitioners may use it in complex formulas for "wind-heat" patterns, which can include sinus congestion or infection-like symptoms. However, its direct use for sinus infection (rhinosinusitis) is not a prominent or widely cited application in the traditional literature.
From a modern scientific perspective, there is little to no direct evidence supporting Lophatherum's efficacy for sinus infection. Most pharmacological studies have focused on its anti-inflammatory and diuretic properties, with little attention to its effects on respiratory infections or sinus health. Therefore, while its use for sinus infection may occur in some traditional contexts, this application is not strongly rooted in either historical use or scientific validation.
